SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVES TO PLASTIC Alexander Parkes, a British chemist, created plastic, also known as parkesina, in 1856. It was created as a less costly substitute for ivory. Chemically, plastic was exceedingly light and stable. Plastic was easy to mould and had strong insulation and low thermal conductivity, with the added benefit of not rusting. It began to be widely produced as a result of its many qualities. Plastic began to replace numerous materials due to its low cost, and it is now utilised in practically every area, including packaging, construction materials, consumer goods, textiles, equipment, and transportation. The same characteristics that made plastic so durable also made it so difficult to get rid of. And it was then that it was discovered that it was probably not the finest innovation in human history.
